The Student Math League Competition is a math contest organized and sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). The competition consists of two rounds, each one hour in length, containing questions at the precalculus level. Any Wake Tech student who has not already earned a degree is eligible for local, state, and national awards.  Awards are only given after the second round and the individual score is the sum of the two rounds. For detailed information and practice tests, visit the AMATYC web site at www.AMATYC.org and the link to the Student Math League.

Wake Tech took 12 students to the competition.  They were (in alphabetical order):  Ken Ackerman,  Ryan Beauchemin, Alex Bessey,  Joseph Caswell, Chris Celestino , Abdou Ndiaye, William Newlin,  Derrick Sprague, Alisha Taylor , Diwash Thapa , Chris Vance and Jacob Walsh.

The competition has two phases.  The morning phase consists of an individual test of 40 Calculus questions.  We took the top three spots. Each winner received money and a plaque.

The winners were: 

1st place:  William Newlin  

2nd place:  Jacob Walsh

3rd place:  Diwash Thapa 

The second phase is a team competition.  We formed three teams.  Wake Tech placed 2nd  place in this phase. Each received a $15 gift card and medal.

The winning team was:

Jacob Walsh,  Abdou Ndiaye, Alex Bessey and Joseph Caswell
