Georgia Math Tournament Highlights April 2011

Calculus Tournament, Competitions No Comments »

The Eagles went down to Georgia and came back with many awards at the 17th annual Gainesville State College Math Tournament including an impressive 2nd place overall trophy.

There were 104 students from 11 colleges in the SE region represented at the event.

The Wake Tech team was (in alphabetical order):  Kyung Lan Choi, Joel Gray, Kyle Hovey, Sara Monti, Long Nguyen, Alex Park, Taylor Petty, and Max von St. Paul.

The tournament has two components.

The morning component is an individual contest consisting of 40 questions where the content is aimed at the Calculus I and Calculus II levels. The average score for all 104 students taking the test was 17.5.  All of our students performed above the average in the morning competition.   The highest score on this test was 38.  Our Kyung Lan Choi took 5th place with a score of 31.  She received a plaque and monetary award.  Taylor Petty came in 6th with 29 and rounding out the top three from Wake Tech was Joel Gray with a rank of 8th and a score of 28.  Half of our students were in the top eleven.

The afternoon component of the tournament is a team competition consisting of ten rounds of Student Math League type questions.  In total, there were 40 teams in this phase of the competition.  Wake Tech had two teams.  Team A members were Joel Gray, Kyle Hovey, Sara Monti, and Max von St. Paul.  Team B members were:  Kyung Lan Choi, Long Nguyen, Alex Park and Taylor Petty.  Teams A and B were consistently in the top 4 after each round of questions.  The final results revealed that our team A took second place in this part of the competition winning medals and gift certificates.

Our school score and rank is calculated using the top three individual scores on the morning component and the top team score from the afternoon competition.  It was an extremely tight race this year with literally 2 questions on the afternoon competition separating first and second place.  Our school earned second place overall this year and as a result we have yet another huge trophy to add to our growing collection.
